The Perfect Draft - 2011

(Pro Football Stats) eBook

In 1967, the NFL and the AFL held their first joint draft. For the six years previously, the two leagues had competed against each other, drafting the same players. Merlin Olsen was not only drafted by the Los Angeles Rams but also by the Denver Broncos. Joe Namath was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals as well as the Jets. But for the past 45 seasons, the two - now one - leagues have sat together and jointly selected from the nation's pool of great college football players. Looking back over the past 45 years, I wanted to assemble the best picks of all-time, or "The Perfect Draft." Who was the best player at each pick? What would such a draft look like? To begin with, the current basic draft will consist of 7 picks for each of the 32 teams. That's 224 picks before things like compensatory or supplemental picks arrive to muck things up. So that's what I did, the best of each of the 224 picks. I realize this method puts players of more recent drafts at a disadvantage. They don't have the body of work to match up with the like of Favre or Lambert or Singletary.

If you want to know more than who was the best, but there was no vehicle to satisfy this curiosity, no way to compare good players from forty years ago with present day players.

Now there is. . . It's easy to find stats of a football player for a given season, or over a whole career, but the numbers don't mean much without a context. Now, with Pro Football Stats, you can have at your fingertips a decade-long snapshot of a team or a player. You can track a team's dominance over the league, or track any player's ascendancy - or decline - over a ten-year period using this easy-to-use resource book.

Pick 6

Robert Brazile, LB

Jackson State

Houston Oilers (1975)

Honorable Mention:

Brown and Jones were anchors on their offensive lines. Little was the Broncos offense, but Brazile was named All-Pro linebacker five times during the height of the "Steel Curtain."
